Alabama formally authorized construction on the $3.2 billion Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project, clearing the final procedural step before work begins. The state said it is the "largest transportation infrastructure project in Alabama history."
The Alabama Department of Transportation, acting on behalf of the Alabama Toll Road, Bridge and Tunnel Authority, issued a notice to proceed to the Kiewit Massman Traylor design-build team on Sept. 25, according to the governor’s office.
The notice followed the close of bond sales and federal financing earlier this month and marked the final procedural step before construction.
Groundbreaking Planned for Oct. 2
Gov. Kay Ivey and U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy were scheduled to attend a groundbreaking ceremony in Mobile on Oct. 2, the release said.
Project Cost and Corridor Impact
The state puts the project’s construction cost at $3.2 billion and says it is intended to support Alabama’s Gulf Coast region and strengthen a vital interstate corridor through Mobile and Baldwin counties.
Construction Schedule and Next Steps
The announcement did not provide a detailed construction schedule, project completion date or sequencing plan.
