Planned Investment and Filing
Piedmont Healthcare plans to invest nearly $600 million in a relocation hospital in Newton County, east of Atlanta, in what the nonprofit health system describes as the second-largest capital project in its history. Piedmont said it will fund the project entirely in a Sept. 22, 2026, statement.
The health system filed a Letter of Determination with the Georgia Department of Community Health for the proposed facility.
Piedmont has not announced a construction start date, project size or contractor.
Why is Piedmont Relocating a Hospital
The proposed facility would replace Piedmont Newton Hospital, an existing hospital built in 1954. The hospital is licensed for 128 beds but is limited by its aging and landlocked physical plant, according to Piedmont’s announcement. Thus, an expansion of that facility is not a practical solution.
The relocation is intended to support modernization and expand the hospital’s ability to serve Newton County and communities along the Interstate 20 corridor.
Newton County, located about 35 miles east of Atlanta, had more than 112,000 residents in the 2020 U.S. Census. The city of Social Circle, partially located in Newton county, is where car manufacturer Rivian is planning to open a new $5 billion factory.
Serving a Growing Region
Piedmont said the project is intended to position the hospital to grow with the county and provide greater access to care.
“Piedmont exists to serve its communities and this investment will help to serve one of Georgia’s fastest-growing communities,” Piedmont Healthcare President and CEO Kevin Brown said in the announcement.
Piedmont partnered with Newton Medical Center to form Piedmont Newton in 2015. Since then, Piedmont said it has invested $70 million in expanding services and improving the hospital facility.
The health system also said it has invested nearly $2 billion in expansion projects across the communities it serves during the past five years.

The planned relocation would rank behind only the Marcus Tower in spend according to the Piedmont statement. That structure opened on the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital campus in 2020.
Piedmont Newton’s Current Role
Piedmont Newton employs about 1,000 people and has more than 500 physicians and 200 advanced practice practitioners on its medical staff.
The hospital recorded nearly 8,000 inpatient admissions in fiscal 2026, while its 32-bed emergency department handled more than 52,000 visits, according to Piedmont.
The Newton location provides advanced neonatal intensive care and serves as a primary stroke center for the area.
Piedmont said the hospital has received 11 “A” grades from the Leapfrog Group, an organization that evaluates hospital safety. Its healthcare system includes 2,000 locations, with 28 hospitals, and cares for over 4 million patients a year.
