The $5 Billion Rivian Georgia Manufacturing Megaproject Nears a Start Date

KEY POINTS

  • Car manufacturer Rivian is planning to open a new factory in Social Circle, Georgia.

  • The $5 billion development would expand Rivian’s footprint in Georgia, joining the nearby East Coast Headquarters.

  • Rivian could follow a group of megaprojects that recently drove a record two-month period for Manufacturing starts.

Electric car company Rivian is nearing its construction start date on a $5 billion automotive factory in Social Circle, Georgia.

The development was first announced back in 2021 but paused in 2024 to preserve capital as Rivian experienced a sales downturn.

The project appears to be back on, aided by a $6.6 billion loan from the Department of Energy in 2025, with a November start date now approaching.

What is the Rivian Georgia Plant

The 16 million square foot development would produce Rivian's R2 SUV and R3 crossover vehicles, with production expected to begin in 2028, according to a press release from the State of Georgia.

At completion, the facility is expected to create 7,500 jobs and produce up to 400,000 vehicles a year.

The manufacturing facility would expand Rivian's footprint in the state, sitting roughly 40 miles east of the company's East Coast Headquarters on the Atlanta Beltline.

What is the Impact on Manufacturing Construction

The Rivian megaproject, if realized, would join a strong second half of 2026 for manufacturing construction. July and August saw over $50 billion in Manufacturing construction starts, the most on record for a two-month period.

Megaprojects, defined as developments with total start values exceeding $1 billion, drove this record figure, including the groundbreaking of the $25 billion Micron chip fabrication plant and the $10 billion Optimus Factory project.

The record two-month period has lifted year-to-date (YTD) Manufacturing construction starts to just 2.8% below the same period a year ago. For reference, in June, before the record July and August bump, the YTD figure sat 61.5% below the comparable period in 2025.

What Community Support is Rivian Offering

The 1,800-acre development is expected to include recreational trails for employees and customers alongside the vertical construction.

Rivian has also partnered with the Technical College System of Georgia for its Technical Trades Program, which includes a 16-week foundational training program followed by on-the-job training at Rivian's manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois.

Graduates from this program will return to Georgia upon completion.

Additionally, Rivian is creating another apprenticeship program to support future maintenance needs at the Georgia facility. Georgia's HOPE Grants will cover tuition for this program, while Rivian will cover other non-tuition expenses.
