Sherwin-Williams opened an expanded architectural paint and coatings manufacturing facility in Statesville, North Carolina, completing a project that adds production and logistics capacity at the company’s largest North American plant.

The company held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 30 at the metropolitan Charlotte area facility. The expansion includes nearly 50,000 square feet of improvements, expanded production space, automation enhancements, four new rail spurs and related infrastructure.

Built for Flexibility and Efficiency

Sherwin-Williams said the upgraded facility will strengthen its manufacturing, distribution and logistics capabilities. The Statesville site complements a nearby distribution service center that connects production, transportation and distribution operations.

The plant opening comes as ConstructConnect reported that new Manufacturing construction starts fell by 77.2% year-over-year in second-quarter 2026. Chief Economist Michael Guckes reported that "lingering uncertainty around industrial policy and high interest rates weigh on investment."

Through August, Manufacturing construction starts are down 2.8%, year-to-date.

Rail and Automation Upgrades Reshape Plant Operations

The Sherwin-Williams project combines traditional industrial expansion with automation and rail improvements. The new rail spurs are intended to streamline material handling, while the expanded production space and automation upgrades add flexibility to the facility’s manufacturing operations.

Sherwin-Williams has operated in Statesville since 1993. The company said transportation access, the local skilled workforce and the location’s position within its manufacturing and distribution network were factors in selecting the site for expansion.

The project also reflects a public-private partnership involving the company, the state of North Carolina, Iredell County and the City of Statesville. The public entities approved incentives in support of the expansion.
