L3Harris Receives $4.7B Missile Propulsion Award, Investing Billions in US Manufacturing

L3Harris Technologies has received an undefinitized contract award from Lockheed Martin valued at $4.7 billion over seven years to produce propulsion systems for the PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptor.

The award is the largest PAC-3 propulsion contract in L3Harris Technologies history, according to the September 8 company statement. It aligns with a long-term framework agreement established with the Department of War as the defense industry continues to expand production of critical munitions.

“Receiving this contract at unparalleled speed allows us to continue expanding PAC-3 propulsion production capacity to enable a wartime footing,” said Ken Bedingfield, president of Missile Solutions at L3Harris.  

Camden Expansion Expected to Come Online in 2027

L3Harris broke ground in June on two new PAC-3 MSE production facilities at its Camden, Arkansas, site. The facilities are expected to be operational in 2027 and are designed to increase on-site production, improve throughput and modernize solid rocket motor manufacturing.

The expansion builds on earlier investments at Camden, including dedicated production bays and automated digital X-ray systems used to support PAC-3 manufacturing.

L3Harris also said it is investing billions of dollars across its propulsion manufacturing footprint in response to the Department of War’s push to increase critical munitions output. The company plans to build approximately 60 new facilities and add more than 1 million square feet of manufacturing space across Alabama, Virginia and Arkansas.

The company noted that the award value, production increases, and capacity expansion plans include forward-looking statements and remain subject to continued funding and other risks.

Contract Supports Multiple Propulsion Components

The agreement will support large-scale production of three propulsion elements for the PAC-3 MSE interceptor: an advanced two-pulse solid rocket motor, the Lethality Enhancer and Attitude Control Motors.

The PAC-3 MSE is part of the Patriot missile defense system, a mobile, land-based system fielded by the U.S. Army and deployed internationally. According to its website, L3Harris Technologies provides "end-to-end technology solutions connecting the space, air, land, sea and cyber domains in the interest of national security."
