KEY POINTS

  • A familiar name will build San Diego City College’s new Saville Theatre.

  • The existing Saville Theatre will be demolished and replaced by the Saville Performing Arts Center.

  • Design approvals finish by 2027, with construction ending in 2030.

San Diego City College has selected the contractor to rebuild its Saville Theatre, and it’s a company very familiar with the downtown campus.

What contractor will be building the new Saville Theatre?

Arizona-based Sundt Construction has announced they are tied to build the new theater. Sundt says it has had a longstanding business relationship with the school, completing four projects for them over the past 20 years.

This next step comes after months of research and workshops by San Diego Community College, in order to shape the design and needs of transforming school’s beloved primary venue into the new Saville Performing Arts Center.

What will happen to San Diego’s existing Saville Theatre?

Plans call for the demolition of the existing Saville Theatre, and replacing it with a new, modernized facility, including a main theater with up to 350 seats. When complete, San Diego City College says the Saville Performing Arts Center will also feature rehearsal and dance spaces, recording and editing areas, scene and costume shops, and improved ADA-accessible walkways. According to Sundt Construction, the building will be about 28,000 sq. ft. in total.

What are the next goals in the Saville Theatre project?

San Diego City College says the next big goals are approvals of the design, as well as getting the thumbs up from California’s Division of the State Architect (DSA), which are expected to be completed by June 2027 and December 2027, respectively. Construction is scheduled to wrap up by February 2030, with fixtures and furniture expected to move in by May 2030.
