Path Cleared for Construction of New Mexico United Stadium Following Dismissed Lawsuit

KEY POINTS

  • A significant legal hurdle to building the New Mexico United soccer stadium at Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta Park has been eliminated, clearing the way for the project to move forward.

  • The privately funded stadium will seat 8,000 to 10,000 and become New Mexico United’s home.

  • City leaders highlight the project’s potential to boost community development and tourism.

The City of Albuquerque said in a statement yesterday that a major legal obstacle to constructing the New Mexico United soccer stadium at Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta Park has been removed. On Monday, a New Mexico district court judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by neighborhood groups that sought to halt the project, allowing the long-anticipated stadium to move forward.

Albuquerque’s Environmental Planning Commission (EPC) approved the stadium project in November last year. After exhausting appeals with the Albuquerque City Council, neighborhood groups challenged the EPC’s authority in court, delaying construction.

The court’s decision favoring the city means construction can proceed without legal barriers.

Stadium Details and Community Impact

The new stadium will seat 8,000 to 10,000 fans and serve as the primary home for New Mexico United, which currently plays most games at Isotopes Park baseball stadium.

No city funding will be used for the construction of the stadium.

Mayor Tim Keller emphasized the project’s broader significance, calling it “the culmination of decades of effort” and highlighting its potential to create safe, communal spaces for families and support various community development activities, from local tournaments to sports tourism.

Stadiums were featured in ConstructConnect’s Summer 2025 Construction Starts Forecast. The Sports Arenas and Convention Centers subcategory is projected to grow by 8.9% in 2025, followed by increases of 10.1% in 2026, 10.7% in 2027, 11.1% in 2028, and 11.4% in 2029, as reported by Michael Guckes, Chief Economist at ConstructConnect.

Peter Trevisani, CEO of New Mexico United, said in a statement that the club is “thrilled with the District Court’s ruling that agrees with the EPC’s decision to allow the New Mexico United Stadium at Balloon Fiesta Park”.

New Mexico United currently leads the Western Conference of the USL Championship, the second tier of professional soccer in the United States.

What’s Ahead for the Construction Project

With the lawsuit dismissed, construction is expected to start soon, although the announcement did not include a specific date. The stadium is poised to become a hub for sports, entertainment, and community events, supporting local economic development and providing a new home for soccer fans across New Mexico.
