The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center officially opened its University Hospital, a $1.9 billion, 1.9-million-square-foot facility in Columbus, on February 22, 2026. In a statement, officials said, “The hospital is the largest single-facility construction project in the university’s history and the largest single-facility hospital project to open in the United States in 2026.”

Historic Patient Move: A Feat of Precision and Planning

In late February, the hospital completed a highly organized transfer of 425 patients into the new facility in under eight hours. This historic hospital-to-hospital move involved over 12,000 staff members and was thoroughly planned over the course of a year.

Each patient was accompanied by a nurse and transport team, navigating up to three-tenths of a mile along dedicated indoor routes to the new 26-story hospital facility.

“This is about more than just opening a building,” said Ohio State President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. “It’s about delivering life-changing patient care, advancing innovative research, and providing high-quality education for generations to come.”

Modern Features for Personalized Care

The new University Hospital is designed with patient-centered care at its core. Key features of the new construction include:

  • 820 private rooms with 9-foot windows and 75-inch digital screens for telehealth, environmental controls, and entertainment.

  • 24 advanced operating rooms, including hybrid neurovascular suites for complex stroke care.

  • 234 ICU beds and the region’s only Level 4 maternity care hospital with express elevator access for laboring patients.

  • 148 additional beds for cancer patients at The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.

“Advanced technology in each room and throughout the hospital improves the healing process and bolsters patient comfort,” said Dr. Andrew Thomas, Chief Clinical Officer at the Wexner Medical Center, in the release on its website.

The increasing use of innovative construction methods, such as prefabrication and modular design, enhances efficiency and reduces costs. These trends align with the University Hospital’s focus on biophilic design, maximizing natural light, and creating healing environments for patients and staff.

Expanding Access for a Growing Population

The new hospital adds nearly 400 beds to the Wexner Medical Center, addressing the needs of central Ohio’s rapidly growing population, which is projected to exceed three million by 2050. Its proximity to existing hospitals facilitates collaboration on complex cases, enhancing care quality.

“This milestone is not just for Ohio State but for the communities we serve across Ohio and beyond,” said Dr. John J. Warner, CEO of the Wexner Medical Center.
