Google will invest $1 billion over the next two years to expand its Lenoir, North Carolina, data center campus, according to WSOCTV. The expansion comes amid growing demand for AI and cloud computing services and will further enhance the 3.37 million-square-foot facility, the company revealed on Friday.
The project will focus on the Caldwell County campus, a 60-acre site that supports key Google services such as Search, Maps, and YouTube. Currently employing approximately 400 workers, the Lenoir Google data center campus features buildings ranging from 100,000 to 400,000 square feet, with the most recent addition measuring 148,800 square feet.

Google has not disclosed specific details about the new square footage, additional hires, or construction timelines beyond a two-year window. Local leaders have highlighted the expansion’s potential to bolster workforce development. One estimate suggests the project could create at least 30 new roles.
As part of the investment, Google is launching a $2 million Energy Impact Fund in partnership with Blue Ridge Energy and Advanced Energy. The fund will support weatherization and energy efficiency upgrades for schools and low-income households.
Additionally, the company has pledged $100,000 for the renovation of a historic high school and $270,000 through 2027 to support digital equity and vocational training programs at Caldwell Community College.
This latest Google investment builds on a $600 million upgrade completed in 2024 and continues the site’s growth since its $1.2 billion investment in 2007 to build the Lenoir data center.
