Data Center Construction Spending Hits Record Highs: Bloomberg, ConstructConnect Discuss What's Next on August 4

KEY POINTS

  • Data center construction spending hit $22.3 billion in June 2026; the second-highest month on record, with year-to-date spending already surpassing all of 2025's total.

  • A free virtual event on Tuesday, August 4 at 12 p.m. Eastern will unpack what's fueling that growth, the megaproject pipeline through 2030, and the warning signs to watch, featuring ConstructConnect Chief Economist Michael Guckes and Bloomberg Green Markets' Xavier McClafferty.

  • Event is open to all attendees, and a transcript will be provided afterward.

Data center construction spending totaled $22.3 billion in June 2026, which is the second-highest monthly total ever recorded, according to ConstructConnect’s August 2026 Data Center Report. Only January's $25.5 billion spend has been higher. Year-to-date spending through June now stands at $81.5 billion, already eclipsing 2025's full-year total of $72.5 billion, and three times 2024's total figure.

ConstructConnect, Bloomberg have the answers on what’s next for data center spending

With a few months still to go in 2026, there are two major questions many in construction are asking:

  • How much data center spending will grow in the years ahead?

  • How long will all that growing data center spending last?

ConstructConnect and Bloomberg's Green Markets will answer both of those questions during “What’s the Outlook for Data Center Construction?”, a free virtual event Tuesday, August 4, at 12 p.m. Eastern. The live, one hour conversation, betwen ConstructConnect Chief Economist Michael Guckes and Bloomberg’s Xavier McClafferty will cover even more major factors in the construction economy, including:

Why the event is important for construction and financial professionals

Over the past five years, median and average data center construction costs have risen 17% and 22%, respectively, on a compounded annual basis, per the August 2026 Data Center Report.

Where that money is landing is shifting, too.

"As developers seek sites with ample power and water resources, construction activity is moving toward the South and Midwest, regions that also align with the nation's natural gas pipeline infrastructure," Guckes wrote in the report.

"Near-term planned spending is geographically consistent with the broader shift toward regions with available power and water resources,” he added.

A pipeline under pressure? Experts to discuss increased project delays

Even with spending at record highs, the runway ahead isn't guaranteed. Some developers are revising project plans amid power constraints, rising costs, and growing community opposition. At least 75 projects valued at roughly $130 billion were delayed or blocked in 2026’s first quarter alone, according to Data Center Watch

Guckes and McClafferty will provide answers to this gap, as well, during “What’s the Outlook for Data Center Construction?”

What is Bloomberg Green Markets?

The webcast is a part of Bloomberg Green Markets' broader programming. Green Markets focuses on bringing transparency to commodity markets that don't always get it.

"We're all over the concrete value chain, from the cement, aggregates and ready-mix markets to rebar," McClafferty told ConstructConnect News.

The session is free and open to anyone who wants to attend, not just Bloomberg subscribers.

"We open these discussions up to anyone who wants to attend," McClafferty said. "[You'll see] a mix of Bloomberg subscribers from the financial market and construction contractors, including steel fabricators, cement and concrete producers, steel mills, et cetera."

The event is free, but you must register! Here's the link:

The event will be held on Zoom, and a transcript will be made available to attendees afterward.
