KEY POINTS
-
Constellation received a conditional DOE loan commitment of up to $5 billion for potential uprates at eight US nuclear plants.
-
The facilities are in Illinois, Maryland and Pennsylvania, yet, the company’s release does not estimate the added capacity from these potential projects.
-
Due diligence and financing conditions remain, and the commitment is not a final decision to proceed with any individual uprate project.
Commitment Targets Existing Nuclear Plants
Constellation announced Oct. 27 that the U.S. Department of Energy made a conditional loan commitment of up to $5 billion to support potential uprates at select facilities. Uprates increase electricity production at existing nuclear plants.
The company said the commitment could help accelerate additional capacity, but its release does not estimate how much power these potential DOE-backed projects would add.

Which Eight Facilities are Under Consideration
The listed US nuclear power plants are Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle and Quad Cities in Illinois; Calvert Cliffs in Maryland; and Limerick in Pennsylvania.
Constellation said the commitment remains subject to due diligence, definitive financing documents and applicable conditions. It does not itself represent a final decision to proceed with any individual uprate or project at every facility under consideration, according to the company.
The company separately said long-term Google and Amazon agreements have incentivized more than $7 billion in investments to add about 1,080 megawatts of nuclear capacity. That figure applies to those separate customer-backed investments, not an announced capacity estimate for the potential DOE-financed uprates.
Power Infrastructure: 68% of Civil Construction Gains through September
Constellation said on its website that rapid advances in generative AI are a "a once-in-a-generation catalyst for American growth" and are driving projections of unprecedented electricity-demand growth. The company added that powering AI with safe, secure and reliable U.S. electricity adds to rising demand from electrification and the resurgence of American manufacturing.
ConstructConnect News reported Oct. 27 that power infrastructure accounted for 68% of civil-construction gains through September. ConstructConnect Chief Economist Michael Guckes said that the power infrastructure "current total of $30.7 billion is well above last year’s comparable period spending of $11.7 billion."
Guckes pointed out that, "Among the largest projects lifting the subcategory are an earlier $13 billion Commonwealth liquefied natural gas export terminal, and two September projects including a $4.0 billion North Dakota power plant and a $1.6 billion Texas substation."
