We Energies Proposes Energy Expansion Across Wisconsin

KEY POINTS

  • We Energies is planning an expansion to add nearly 3 gigawatts of energy capacity, including renewable energy, battery storage, and modern natural gas facilities, to strengthen Wisconsin’s power grid.

  • The expansion is anticipated to help drive economic growth by creating construction jobs and supporting data centers and other energy-intensive customers without shifting costs to residential or business customers.

  • A We Energies customer protection plan ensures data centers pay their full share of energy costs, while federal tax credits may help its customers save on electricity expenses.

We Energies announced an expansion plan last week aimed at adding nearly 3 gigawatts of new energy capacity to Wisconsin’s power grid.

The proposal, filed with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, includes a mix of renewable energy projects, battery storage, and modern natural gas facilities designed to meet growing energy demands while supporting economic development across the state.

A Boost for Wisconsin’s Economy and Energy Security

The expansion plan is set to power data centers and other energy-intensive customers, driving economic growth and creating thousands of construction jobs. The renewable energy facilities will provide clean energy on a daily basis, while the natural gas plants will operate during peak demand to ensure reliability.

Details of the Expansion

The announced We Energies plan includes:

The renewable energy and battery storage projects are expected to qualify for federal tax credits, potentially saving customers in long-term costs, according to officials.

“These new power plants reflect our commitment to reliability, economic growth, and putting our customers first,” said Mike Hooper, president of We Energies.

“Together, these projects and the data centers they support will energize Wisconsin’s workforce, creating thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of full-time high-tech and energy careers.”

In addition to job creation, the projects will strengthen Wisconsin’s power grid, add thousands of megawatts of locally produced electricity, and enhance energy security for customers statewide.

Fairness for All Customers

We Energies emphasized in a statement that its customer protection plan ensures fairness in cost distribution. Data centers will bear the full cost of the power they consume, including the construction of power generation plants and distribution facilities built to serve them. Residential and business customers will not be required to subsidize these costs.

A Balanced Energy Future

The combination of renewable energy and low-carbon natural gas plants is designed to ensure a reliable power supply for all customers, even during peak demand.

We Energies, the trade name of Wisconsin Electric Power Co. and Wisconsin Gas LLC, subsidiaries of WEC Energy Group, serves over 2.3 million customers across Wisconsin for electric, natural gas, and steam services.
