The Construction Economy Brief for August 2026

Written by Julie Riley, Social Media Manager | Aug 18, 2026, 4:56:15 PM

ConstructConnect Chief Economist Michael Guckes hosts a monthly video series in which he breaks down the key issues impacting the North American construction economy in under 3 minutes.

June 2026 set multiple records for U.S. Nonresidential construction spending. For the first time ever, monthly Nonresidential construction spending exceeded $100 billion, while Nonresidential Building reached a record $65.5 billion, up 5% from the previous record set in January.

In the August 2026 Construction Economy Brief, Michael Guckes, Chief Economist at ConstructConnect, looks beneath the headline numbers to explain what is driving the construction market and where risks are emerging.

In this episode of the Construction Economy Brief you'll find out about:

  • Why Data Centers accounted for 80% of the $23.5 billion Offices category.

  • How Offices represented one-quarter of all Nonresidential spending and more than one-third of Nonresidential Building spending.

  • Record or near-record performance in Warehouses, Schools, Parking garages, Military construction, and Roads.

  • Why Nonresidential Building activity shifted from 14.4% growth at the end of the first quarter to a 6.2% contraction by midyear.

  • What weakness in Manufacturing, Sports and Convention Centers, and other subcategories means for contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and construction decision-makers.

The latest construction market data points to an uneven landscape. Top-line growth does not tell the full story. Watch this month’s brief to see where construction opportunities are building, where momentum is fading, and how a deeper look at the data can support better business decisions.
