KEY POINTS

  • Skanska will build four data centers in the Southeast U.S. under a $1.2 billion contract with an existing client.

  • The portfolio will total approximately 808,000 square feet and include shells, technical interiors, support areas and offices.

  • The award comes as U.S. data center construction spending reaches record levels and developers concentrate activity in regions with available power and water.

Skanska signed a $1.2 billion contract with an existing client to build four new data centers in the Southeast, the company said in an Aug. 20 statement.

What Does the Skanska Award Include

Skanska’s scope includes construction of the building shells and interior fit-outs for technical spaces, support areas and office functions.

The four facilities will total approximately 808,000 square feet. Additional project details were not released at the time of publication, including the client identity.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026 and is expected to reach completion in the third quarter of 2028.

Southeast Stands Out as US Data Center Construction Near Record Levels

The Skanska contract arrives as data center construction activity continues to expand across the United States.

The Southeast, in particular, has become an important destination for data center development as owners and operators seek sites with access to power and water.

According to ConstructConnect’s August 2026 Data Center Report, construction spending in Data Centers reached $22.3 billion in June 2026, the second-highest monthly total on record. Only the January 2026 starts, $25.5 billion, was higher.

Over 75% of planned US Data Center construction starts through the end of 2026 are in the Southeast region, ConstructConnect reported. These projects are still in the preconstruction phase and are not guaranteed to break ground.

The ConstructConnect Data Center Report also noted:

  • First-half spending reached $81.5 billion, exceeding 2025’s full-year total of $72.5 billion.

  • The average data center reached nearly 700,000 square feet in the second quarter, more than double the 2022 average.

  • The 2026 median and average construction costs reached $570 and $859 per square foot, up 38% and 67%, respectively, from 2025.

With data center spending already above 2025’s full-year total, the Skanska contract reflects continued investment in regions with the power and water needed to support data center growth.
