The New Mexico Department of Transportation announced the start of construction on the Rio Bravo Bridge replacement project, which will replace the eastbound and westbound bridges carrying Rio Bravo traffic across the Rio Grande in the South Valley.
The civil construction project is planned to include roadway widening and new pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. Improvements will also include new sidewalks, trails and additional street lighting along the corridor.
The nonresidential construction category that includes roads and bridges has seen considerable growth over the past 24 months, although that is anticipated to pull back.
In the ConstructConnect Autumn 2026 Construction Economy Forecast, Chief Economist Michael Guckes reported, "Civil construction growth will moderate after two strong years, although nearly every segment except Airports is receiving an upward revision."
NMDOT said two lanes will remain open during peak travel times throughout construction. Pedestrian and bicycle access also will remain available, although temporary detours may be required as work progresses.
Construction is expected to continue through 2030.
