The system, called a sequencing batch reactor, uses multiple treatment stages, including oxygenation, biological activity and chemical treatment, to ensure the water released into the creek is safe, according to WKTV.
The new plant is designed to last more than 40 years. Replacing large pumps is expected to cut electrical costs by 50% and reduce chemical costs by 80%.
The facility also recirculates treated water for use throughout the plant, reducing the need for fresh water, according to WKTV.
