New $1.5B Shared Arena Slated for Construction in South Philadelphia

KEY POINTS

  • A $ 1.5 billion multi-purpose arena, the New South Philadelphia Arena, is scheduled to open in 2030, replacing the Xfinity Mobile Arena. It will host the Flyers, 76ers, and a new WNBA team, forming part of a larger entertainment district.

  • Turner Construction and AECOM Hunt, with over 50 years of stadium expertise, lead construction alongside local firms.

  • Ownership is shared by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and Comcast Spectacor, with OVG360 managing the project. Initially opposed by some, the arena was approved by the Philadelphia City Council in December 2024.

A new, $1.5-billion multi-purpose arena is scheduled to be built in south Philadelphia that will be shared by the Flyers of the NHL, the 76ers of the NBA and a new WNBA team.

The venue, dubbed the New South Philadelphia Arena, is expected to open its doors in 2030. It will be part of a larger entertainment district and eventually replace the current Xfinity Mobile Arena.

A Landmark Arena for South Philadelphia

Turner Construction and AECOM Hunt are construction managers for the structure, which is being built in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. The pair recently teamed up on a forthcoming new stadium for the NFL Cleveland Browns near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Populous and Moody Nolan are leading design of the Philadelphia stadium.

The joint venture will also include prominent Philadelphia-based firms Perryman Construction, Hunter Roberts Construction Group and Camfred Construction. They will work closely with the ownership of the Flyers and the design team to bring the new arena to life.

The arena will be in the same part of the city as stadiums for the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles and MLB’s Philadelphia Phillies.

Design and Construction

“Having Turner and AECOM Hunt on our team is a game-changer as we work to build the most technologically advanced and fan-focused sports and entertainment venue in the world,” said David Adelman, chairman of the joint venture between the 76ers and the Flyers.

“The knowledge this venture brings to the project will ensure we are on the cutting-edge of the next era of how fans experience live sports and entertainment.”

Jason Kopp, COO, central region, with AECOM Hunt, said the company is honored to help bring the future of sports and entertainment to South Philly.

“Designed to transform the fan experience for decades to come, this venue will feature cutting-edge amenities for athletes, performers, and visitors alike – setting a new standard in large-scale venue design and construction.”

Dave Kaminski, vice-president and senior general manager for Turner, said the arena is more than just a construction project – it’s a chance to build something that will be part of Philadelphia’s fabric for generations.

“As someone who calls this city home, I couldn’t be prouder that Turner is helping shape a landmark that will bring people together and celebrate what makes Philadelphia such a special place.”

Turner and AECOM Hunt have more than 50 years of stadium and arena experience, and 20 years working together. Their portfolio together also includes Lincoln Financial Field, FMC Tower, One uCity Square, and the upcoming Chubb Center. Nationally, their sports resume includes SoFi Stadium and Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Barclays Center in New York, and the under-construction Nissan Stadium in Tennessee

Meanwhile, Bank of America has signed on as the official banking partner of the Flyers and 76ers and now owns the naming rights to the club level at Xfinity Mobile Arena, the 76ers and Flyers current home. The bank and teams will work together to help support small businesses.

Dan Hilferty, chairman and CEO at Comcast Spectacor and a governor of the Flyers, said it’s a historic partnership that will expand the bank’s Philadelphia presence beyond the ice, court or stage.

Jim Dever, president at the Bank of America for Greater Philadelphia, said the bank is excited to partner with the Flyers, 76ers, and Xfinity Mobile Arena.

“By harnessing the passion fans have for these three iconic organizations, we know the Greater Philadelphia community – from small businesses looking to take success to the next level, to kids who are practicing to become a future all-star – will benefit from the work we will do together.”

The new arena was announced early in 2025. The 76ers had originally planned to build a venue called 76 Place at Market East in Center City, but cancelled their plans and partnered with the Flyers to build a new arena to be shared by the two teams.

Shared Vision and Community Impact

Ownership of the arena will be shared between Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which owns the 76ers, and Comcast Spectacor, owning entity of the Flyers. OVG360, a division of Oak View Group, will be project manager for the new arena.

Initially, the arena proposal was opposed by many area residents and proprietors of nearby Chinatown as they were worried that it would negatively affect the neighborhood economically.

In the end, the Philadelphia City Council approved the arena proposal in December 2024.
