Another megaproject is set to rise in the United States. Major biopharma player CSL Limited has broken ground on a $1.5 billion expansion to its CSL Behring plasma therapy manufacturing campus in Kankakee, Illinois.

What will be changing at CSL Behring's campus in Kankakee, Illinois?

The project will add a new facility that CSL says will increase its ability to develop treatments for rare diseases and critical care patients, incorporating its patented Horizon 2 manufacturing process. In a news release announcing the expansion, CSL says Horizon 2, “enables significantly greater production of immunoglobulin from the same base amount of plasma. This industry-leading technology is designed to improve plasma efficiency and positions CSL's U.S. network to support sustained growth of the company's lifesaving therapies.”

That advanced process is designed to improve plasma efficiency and support growing global demand for therapies, treating conditions such as primary immunodeficiency, hemophilia and hereditary angioedema, as well as burns, shock, and postpartum issues.

What is the current state of the CSL Behring campus in Kankakee, Illinois?

CSL currently employs more than 1,200 full-time workers at the Kankakee site, which is about a one-hour hour drive from Chicago. The new investment is projected to create at least 300 additional pharmaceutical roles and approximately 800 construction and related jobs in the local community. CSL says the expansion builds on more than $3 billion the company has already invested in its U.S. operations since 2018. The company’s operations are based out of Australia, originally starting out as an arm of the Australian government before privatizing in 1994.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and other state leaders joined CSL leadership and local officials at the March 2026 groundbreaking, calling the project a major win for both patients and the regional economy.
