Lexington, MA Moves Forward with $660 Million High School Project

According to The Lexington Observer, voters in Lexington, Massachusetts, have approved funding for the construction of a new $660 million Lexington High School. The project will modernize one of the area’s most important educational facilities.

The vote passed on December 8, 2025, with 62% support, ensuring financing for a high school that reflects both contemporary education needs and current construction standards, according to the Lexington Observer.

Approximately $533 million will be covered by Lexington residents, with state and federal grants helping to close the gap. 

Focus on Modern Systems and Sustainable Design  

The new Lexington High School will feature systems and design elements aimed at sustainability, energy efficiency, and student well-being. Plans include high-efficiency HVAC systems to improve air quality, enhanced daylighting for natural illumination, and flexible, multi-purpose learning spaces designed to foster collaboration and discovery.

Timeline and Industry Collaboration  

Superintendent Julie Hackett told the Lexington Observer that the project’s focus is on student connection and comfort, stating, “Our students will walk safely through modern hallways… learn in spaces designed for collaboration and discovery.” The design development phase is set to conclude by March 2026, with a refined cost estimate expected at that time.  

The project brings together a team of industry leaders to ensure its success, according to the Lexington High School building project website. Dore + Whittier, serving as the Owner’s Project Manager, with SMMA as the architectural firm, and Turner Construction as the Construction Manager at Risk.

What’s Next?  

With the funding approved by voters and the design development phase underway, the next steps for the Lexington High School project include finalizing preconstruction plans and preparing for the construction phase.

The project team will work closely with the Massachusetts School Building Authority to ensure compliance with state guidelines and maximize funding opportunities. Community engagement will remain a priority, with public forums and updates planned to keep residents informed and involved.

Construction is expected to begin in mid-2026, with a targeted completion date in 2029.
