GSK plans to invest more than $800 million to expand its biopharmaceutical manufacturing and research operations in Upper Merion Township, Pennsylvania, creating a new production and innovation hub in Montgomery County.
The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development said in an Oct. 9 statement that construction is planned to begin in 2027.
GSK is a biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and delivers medicines and vaccines, with research focused on respiratory, immunology and inflammation, oncology, HIV and infectious diseases.
The project is anticipated to create more than 300 jobs over five years and retain approximately 4,500 existing full-time jobs across Pennsylvania.
What is GSK Building in PA?
The expansion will require the demolition of existing buildings and construction of new and enhanced facilities at GSK's Upper Merion campus.
The announcement said GSK plans include a:
-
Commercial-scale biologics manufacturing facility
-
Research and development pilot plant
-
Centralized quality-control laboratory
-
Manufacturing science and technology hub
The facilities are intended to combine clinical and commercial production with research, process development, testing and advanced digital capabilities.
GSK said the integrated campus will help accelerate the transfer of processes from development into manufacturing and support the supply of future medicines.
The project is part of GSK's broader Pennsylvania manufacturing network. The company previously announced an $800 million expansion at its Marietta, Pennsylvania, facility in 2024. State officials said the two investments represent nearly $1.7 billion in planned investment across the Commonwealth.
Why Is GSK Expanding Its Manufacturing
GSK said the Upper Merion project will strengthen its U.S. manufacturing footprint and expand its ability to support both clinical and commercial-scale biologics production.
Pennsylvania officials cited the state's life-sciences workforce, research base and existing manufacturing infrastructure as factors supporting the investment.
The Upper Merion expansion also reflects the growing construction requirements of biopharmaceutical facilities. The work will combine industrial building construction with specialized process systems, laboratory environments, quality-control areas and advanced digital infrastructure.
In a related recent development, Bayer announced Oct. 2, that it plans to invest $2.2 billion in a new pharmaceutical manufacturing site in New Albany, Ohio.
The Bayer project is expected to generate about 1,500 construction jobs and 600 permanent high-value jobs. [Read Bayer Plans $2.2B Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Site in Ohio]
What Should Contractors Watch
GSK has not announced a general contractor, construction manager or detailed project schedule. The company also has not released a project-specific breakdown of the more than $800 million investment.
The 2027 construction start gives contractors, building-product manufacturers and specialty firms a potential early pipeline opportunity.
The Commonwealth said GSK will be eligible for benefits through Pennsylvania's Qualified Manufacturing Innovation and Reinvestment Deduction and Manufacturing Tax Credit programs. Final agreements and project details will determine the timing and scale of procurement activity.
