DOE Backs $418M Alaska Transmission Project

KEY POINTS

  • The U.S. Department of Energy intends to deploy federal funding toward a second high-voltage transmission connection across Alaska.

  • The preliminary total project estimate is approximately $418 million.

  • The project, in planning and funding stage, is intended to strengthen the electrical grid serving military installations and local communities.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) said it intends to deploy federal funding toward a second high-voltage transmission connection across Alaska. The planned project would strengthen the grid serving military installations and local communities, the federal agency announced Oct. 5.

The Alaska Energy Authority’s Beluga-Healy Transmission Project would combine up to $150 million in Defense Production Act funding with $268 million in nonfederal funding.

The preliminary total project estimate is approximately $418 million.

Transmission Project Would Span 223 Miles

The project calls for approximately 223 miles of new transmission line connecting Beluga and Healy.

Once complete, the additional high-voltage connection would provide grid operators with another pathway to move electricity between Southcentral and Interior Alaska, according to DOE.

The department said the project is intended to lower electricity costs and strengthen reliability for approximately 75% of Alaska’s population.

It also described the connection as important to national defense because it would serve communities and major military installations in the state.

Transmission lines and conductors, substations, and power-control and protection equipment are essential to national defense according to Presidential Determination No. 2026-10.
