Alaska Airlines Breaks Ground on $135M Maintenance Hangar at Portland International Airport

KEY POINTS

  • Alaska Airlines broke ground on a new $135 million maintenance hangar at Portland International Airport that will add about 185,000 square feet across maintenance, office, and shop space.

  • The building project is expected to create more than 100 local jobs and expand the airline’s ability to service both narrowbody and widebody aircraft in Portland.

  • The LEED-certified facility is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2028 and is part of the carrier's broader expansion in Portland.

Alaska Airlines broke ground on a new maintenance hangar at Portland International Airport (PDX), adding a major aviation construction project to one of the carrier’s fastest-growing West Coast hubs.

According to a June 16 statement from Alaska Airlines, the project will be built next to Alaska’s existing Horizon Air operations center and maintenance hangar at PDX.

The new Oregon facility will add about 125,000 square feet for indoor aircraft maintenance, plus another 60,000 square feet for offices, engine and machine shops, sheet metal shops and support areas.

The airline said it is investing more than $135 million in the project.

More Capacity for Maintenance Operations

When complete, the hangar will allow maintenance crews to work on up to three narrowbody aircraft or two widebody aircraft at the same time.

Alaska Airlines said that added capacity will help the airline return out-of-service aircraft to service more quickly while easing pressure on existing maintenance facilities in Seattle and other hubs.

The facility will also be able to accommodate Boeing 787-9 aircraft, giving the airline more flexibility in how it maintains its combined Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines fleets.

Portland Investment Expands

The project is slated to create more than 100 jobs for local maintenance technicians, engineers and service professionals, according to the company.

Alaska described the hangar as part of a broader push in Portland, where it has served travelers since 1979 and now operates more than 130 daily departures during the summer schedule. The airline said it expects to offer 50% more seats in Portland by this fall than it did two years ago.

In addition to the hangar project, Alaska recently expanded its lobby footprint at PDX in 2024 and opened a new 14,000-square-foot Alaska Lounge earlier this month.

The airline said the new hangar will be LEED certified and include EV charging stations, water conservation features and sustainable building materials.

Construction is expected to wrap in the second quarter of 2028.
